Description

This foundational course offers a clear and practical introduction to the key standards, systems and commonly used symbols across the major building services disciplines: Electrical, Mechanical, Hydraulic and Fire Services. Whether you're entering the industry or looking to strengthen your technical understanding, this course will sharpen your ability to interpret plans and communicate confidently with consultants, contractors, design teams and many more. Through a focus on real-world application and industry terminology, participants will gain the tools to actively contribute to project delivery and coordination across a range of construction environments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the role of building services within a project and why they are critical to achieving successful outcomes.
  • Understand how to apply and reference the National Construction Code and relevant Australian Standards with confidence across a range of services.
  • Identify the major systems used in various building types and anticipate potential integration issues with other disciplines.
  • Interpret symbols, schematics, and technical references in real design documentation with greater accuracy.
  • Detect errors, omissions, and coordination issues early in the design process to prevent costly setbacks.
  • Communicate more effectively with engineers, consultants, and project stakeholders at every stage of the project lifecycle.
  • Evaluate building services proposals and quotes with clarity, ask informed questions, challenge assumptions, and negotiate stronger outcomes.

Course Structure

This course will cover the following with respect to the key building services disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Hydraulic and Fire Engineering):

  • Introduction to the construction industry and project context
  • Summary of the key requirements from the NCC and the referenced Australian Standards
  • Explanation of the key systems across the respective building services for a mixed-use building
  • Explanation of the standard symbols used in the design packages for each respective service
  • Review of a completed design
  • Clash detection case study
